Elk in the Smoky Mountains

Visiting The Smoky Mountains has long been on my bucket list. So in the fall of 2020, Carina and I put together a couple’s retreat and spend an extended weekend in Ashville, North Carolina. While visiting a photography and art studio, I asked the owner for some tips on where to find and photograph wildlife.

I’d asked this question many times in the past in various locations, and it has usually been met with polite but thinly disguised condescension. I was prepared for the same kind of reply this time, but the owner surprised me! She gave us detailed instructions on where and when to drive to within the Smoky Mountain park to find an elk herd. We followed her advice, and were richly rewarded!
